Robert E. and Linda S. Broadrup

Robert E. and Linda S. Broadrup

Robert E. Broadrup, DDS, Class of 1966, and his wife Linda have an instinct for investment and money management that, when combined with their philanthropic goals and planned giving prowess, has produced a planned gift that will result in a substantial benefit for the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.

Bob practiced dentistry for nearly 40 years in Frederick, MD, first with his father Charles, Class of '32 and then with his brother Fred, Class of '72.

In the course of running a successful dental practice, money management and investing became a routine part of the couple's lives. It seemed only natural to explore investment opportunities in local real estate given Bob's and Linda's multi-generational ties to their community. Having invested wisely, they took their successful real estate investments one step further. When it came time to dispose of their properties they took advantage of tax laws that encouraged gifts of appreciated real estate to charities, and did so in a very special way.

Bob and Linda knew that they could shelter 100% of their real estate capital gains by donating it to the Frederick County Community Foundation and also get a charitable income tax deduction for their gift. The Community Foundation helped Bob and Linda go one step further. The community foundation was able to increase the benefits of Bob and Linda's gift by selling the real estate and then using the proceeds to purchase a commercial annuity on their lives. The annuity produces enough income to pay premiums on a life insurance policy on the couple. This annuity/life insurance arrangement will increase the ultimate gift passing to the School (and other charities as well), by creating a pool of life insurance benefits that will substantially exceed the cash received from the sale of the real estate. In the end, the amount of the gift made by Bob and Linda was ten times their original investment!

Thanks to Bob and Linda's savvy understanding of financial, tax, and philanthropic planning, the School of Dentistry stands to greatly benefit!

Although arrangements like Bob and Linda's are not always available due to fluctuations in the investment environment, using a core asset like appreciated real estate for charitable purposes can yield positive results for donors and their charitable partners. Quote from Dr. Broadrup:

"The doorway of the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery through which I passed, created for me the opportunity to provide dental health care for thousands of patients and to provide ongoing financial help to my community forever, through the Community Foundation of Frederick County (MD)."
